Listed below are multiple courses developed by CT3N members that support our mission.


BE 554 Engineering Biotechnology

Advanced study of re DNA techniques; bioreactor design for bacteria, mammalian and insect culture; separation methods; chromatography; drug and cell delivery systems; gene therapy; and diagnostics

BE 562 Drug Discovery and Development

This course covers topics such as drug discovery targets, drug development, high throughput screening, solid phase synthesis, instrumentation, lab-on-a-chip, pharmacokinetics, and drug delivery.

CBE 557 Stem Cells, Proteomics and Drug Delivery – Soft Matter Fundamentals

This course covers topics and methods in cell and molecular biology and biomedicine from the perspective of soft matter science and engineering. Discussions will cover soft matter related tools and concepts used to 1) isolate, grow, and physically characterize stem cells, 2) quantify biomolecular profiles, 3) deliver drugs to these cells and other sites (such as tumors with cancer stem cells).

CBE 563 Development and Manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals

This course covers topics such as new drug development and regulatory compliance related to small molecules and biologics, overview of biopharma industry, regulation and development process for new chemical entities and biolgies, formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms, current Good Manufacturing Practices, chemistry manufacture and controls, overview of Common Technical Document (CTD), managing post-approval changes – formulatin, process, packaging, and analytical.

CBE 564 / PHRM 564 Drug Delivery Systems

The topics include drug transport, distribution and interactions in the body, specific challenges for biotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics, drug delivery systems and nanocarriers, gene delivery systems, targeted drug delivery, and translational aspects of new drug delivery systems.

PHRM 570 Vascular Biology, Medicine, and Engineering

Lectures are organized in thematic sections on vascular system, coagulation, platelets, endothelium, inflammation, vasoregulation, atherosclerosis, and novel therapies. Each section includes lectures on the bioengineering aspects of the vascular system, including on hemodynamics, flow sensing and contractility, ischemia, vascular cellular adhesion, biomechanics and imaging, vascular biomaterials and drug delivery.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR):

BGS requires all of its predoctoral students to be trained in RCR and SRR. Please visit their webpage for additional information: https://www.med.upenn.edu/bgs-rcr-exdes/. CT3N faculty and students have open group discussions discussing these requirements often.


Bioengineering (School of Engineering and Applied Science) implemented the option for concentrations for undergraduate students. One of the concentrations is “Therapeutics, Drug Delivery, and Nanomedicine”. This concentration encompasses drug discovery, drug design, manufacturing, preparation of micro- and nanodelivery platforms, gene and cell therapy, innovations in targeting, controllable drug release, biodegradation and the mathematical modeling of these systems.
