2012 ITMAT FELLOWSHIPS RFA from Emma Meagher, MD

We are pleased to announce a request for applications for fellowship positions offered by the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT). Each position will provide up to 90K each year plus benefits for two years. The stipend may be used to support salary and/or tuition. The positions are open to individuals nearing the end of their formal training program or junior faculty within the first three years of their academic appointment who wish to pursue formal research training in Translational Research (T1 / Bench to bedside). 

The goals of the program are to support early career investigators while they engage in a T1 research project and complete the Masters of Science in Translational Research (MTR). Please refer to the MTR website for details on the MTR program http://www.med.upenn.edu/mtr/

The application deadline is February 17, 2012 for funding starting July 1, 2012.

Applicants should submit an application package that includes the following:

  1. a full CV
  2. any other external support for the candidate’s salary or research program;
  3. a one page description of the career goals that includes a description of your education plan and how the MTR Degree meets your educational objectives;
  4. a 2-3 page description of the research plan of the applicant;
  5. an NIH biosketch and other support from the proposed mentor;
  6. Three letters of support - these should be supplied by the applicants mentor(s), his/her division chief and/or department chair.

The letters of support should address the following points

Mentor(s) letter of support

  1. Prior experience mentoring translational research trainees
  2. The mentoring plan for the trainee detailing the commitment to mentor the candidate.
  3. The suitability of the trainee's education plan for stated career goals.
  4. The feasibility and relevance of stated area of research to be undertaken during the fellowship.
  5. The resources available to complete the research.
  6. The availability of collaborative relationships that may be required to undertake the research question.

Division Chief/ Dept Chair letters of support

  1. Prior experience with trainees in translational research
  2. Commitment of the division/department to the trainee, his/her research direction and his/her career goals.
  3. Guarantee of protected time for the trainee
  4. Availability of resources for the mentor and mentee
  5. The relevance of the research to the department/division research goals
