Welcome
The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) is a research pharmacy charged with the management of research medications used in clinical (human) drug trials, as well as the oversight of medication use in drug trials conducted throughout the University of Pennsylvania and its affiliates. Agents overseen by the IDS include drugs, natural products, vitamins, biologics and gene therapy agents. The IDS performs this function in the following ways:
HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) Inpatients:
All medications used in research for HOSPITAL INPATIENTS must be dispensed through the IDS, or through the hospital's inpatient pharmacy as facilitated by the IDS. For inpatient studies, the IDS handles drug inventory and dispensing, pharmacy staff training, preparation procedures, drug storage, randomization and blinding and other services as necessary.
PMC (Presbyterian Medical Center) Inpatients:
All medications used in research in HOSPITAL INPATIENTS must be dispensed through the hospital's inpatient pharmacy. For studies which take place at both HUP and PMC, the IDS provides centralized coordination of drug inventory and dispensing activities, enabling a convenient single point of contact for investigators, coordinators and study monitors. For studies which take place only at PMC, the IDS provides assistance as needed.
GCRC (General Clinical Research Center):
The IDS works closely with the GCRC staff to provide services for both inpatients and outpatients. The IDS is involved with ALL studies involving GCRC inpatients. In cooperation with the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Unit pharmacists, the IDS is involved with all outpatient medication trials in the GCRC as well.
OUTPATIENTS (HUP, PMC, Penn Campus, Offsite Clinics, CPUP):
The IDS attempts to ensure that all study medication dispensing to outpatients meets FDA and JCAHO guidelines and state regulations. The majority of research trials the IDS works with involve ambulatory subjects in clinics throughout UPHS.
Other Schools and Colleges
The IDS currently provides research medication management services on a limited basis, to investigators at the School of Nursing, the Ryan Veterinary Hospital, the Monell Chemical Senses Center and the Annenberg School of Communications. In addition, the IDS currently provides specialized services for a limited number of trials at CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) and for individual trials at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
