About the 2010 International Symposium

The Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics held its fifth annual International Symposium on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 26 and 27, 2010. This meeting focused on Interesting Times: The Academic Contribution to Development of Novel Therapeutics in an Era of Reform. The passage of comprehensive health reform coincides with an unsettled global economy and the exertion of transformative pressures on academic health systems, pharmaceutical companies and the biotech and venture industries. How these factors impinge on the pursuit of translational science? What role should academia assume as the process of discovery and development of novel therapeutics moves towards a more modular and globalized endeavor? Outstanding scientists described remarkable therapeutic advances as leaders of medical schools, health systems, funders and regulatory bodies contemplated the rapidly changing landscape in which such opportunities will be pursued.
