ITMAT helps investigators find the resources they need to conduct translational research through our many programs, centers, and cores.

Circa Database of Oscillating Genes

Circadian rhythms drive daily oscillations in many different physiologies, including blood pressure, body temperature and behavior. In addition, disruptions of the circadian clock contribute to the pathologies of metabolic disorders as well as cardiovascular disease and cancer. The Hogenesch lab is interested in the mechanism by which circadian oscillations drive these processes. We are using microarray analysis in combination with curve-fitting and Fourier-transform based statistical algorithms to search the genome for transcripts which oscillate under circadian control. We have identified more than 3000 cycling genes in the liver and smaller subsets of rhythmic genes in the pituitary and fibroblasts. We are currently expanding our initial studies to identify rhythmic transcripts in over 15 different tissue types including the heart, kidneys and brain. These data sets will be mined using bioinformatic techniques to discover novel circadian regulatory elements, characterize components of the circadian clock, and identify regulatory genes responsible for the physiologies and pathologies associated with circadian rhythms.

VIVO

VIVO is an open source semantic web platform that reveals research and scholarship through linked profiles of people and other research-related information. VIVO is populated with data from authoritative, trusted sources to create researcher profiles, highlighting faculty expertise, publications, grants, teaching, service and social networks. VIVO also provides a powerful search functionality for locating people and information within the institution and enables the discovery of scholarship across disciplinary and institutional boundaries. For more information about VIVO please visit vivoweb.org.

iConnect

iConnect is an online platform to facilitate patient recruitment. Using iConnect, patients and healthcare givers can find ongoing clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania and connect with the investigators via email. Investigators can create consumer-friendly trial pages, pre-screeners and track the status of each referred patient through the recruitment process.

REDCap

REDCap is a secure, web-based application for quickly building and managing online surveys and databases for data capture that provides:

  1. an intuitive interface for validated data entry;
  2. audit trails for tracking data manipulation and export procedures
  3. automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to common statistical packages; and
  4. procedures for importing data from external sources.

REDCap also offers a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, as well as advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
