Clinical Trialist Training Program
Join our next cohort of clinicans committed to developing and implementing investigator-initiated clinical trials. 

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold an MD degree
  • Be a dedicated clinician committed to a career path as a clinician-trialist engaged in industry-sponsored as well as investigator initiated trials
  • Have identified a mentor with clinical trial experience
  • Have a partially-developed investigator-initiated trial concept that can ideally be initiated within the two-year program
  • Have funding identified for study execution
  • Have institutional resources in place to support the trial

Faculty Rank & Track:

  • Preference is given to Instructors and Assistant Professors in their first three years of appointment
  • Advanced faculty considering a career pivot to clinical trials will be considered
  • Faculty in the AC, CE, and Tenure tracks are eligible to apply (AC preferred)

Note: Applicants should not have concurrent sources of salary support for research time during the program

Applications for trainees starting July 1, 2026 will open December 1, 2025 and close February 28, 2026

This single application covers both the Clinical Trialist Training Program and the Clinical Trial Scholarship.

Start or Manage Your Application

  • Applicants must have a partially-developed investigator-initiated clinical trial concept that is feasible to initiate within the two-year program
  • You are expected to serve as Principal Investigator, leading the trial’s design and execution under the guidance of an experienced clinical trialist mentor
  • The anticipated source of funding for the trial must be described in the application
  • Budget development and negotiation are considered integral to the project’s feasibility. Applicants should be involved in these conversations prior to and during the program (if possible)
  • By the end of Year 1, trainees are expected to have a fully developed, IRB-approved trial actively enrolling human subjects
  • By the end of Year 2, trainees are expected to:
    • Prepare a manuscript for submission and/or present at a national meeting
    • Share their project experience with past and current CTTP participants, focusing on challenges encountered and strategies used to overcome them

Only one application is required for both the Clinical Trialist Training Program and Scholarship.

In addition to the online application form, applicants will need to upload multiple documents. Please include your name in the header of each file.

  2. Personal Statement: A one-page description of the applicant’s academic track, career goals, and how participation in the program will support these goals. Applicants should also describe their prior experience with clinical trials, if any, including any roles held, types of trials involved (e.g., investigator-initiated, industry-sponsored), and how these experiences have shaped their interest in clinical trial research.
  3. Funding Support for Applicant - Submit this information in the Funding Section of the application:
    • Include any current, pending, or planned awards for salary, tuition, or research supplies.
    • Upload a description of how the applicant’s time will be protected, or a request to be considered for the Clinical Trials Scholarship (indicate percent effort being requested –maximum amount available is 25% effort based on NIH funding maximums).
    • Note: Applicants applying for the scholarship should not have concurrent sources of salary support for research time.
  4. Research Statement: 2-3-page description of proposed trial or submit the IIT Protocol if available
  5. Letter of Support from Primary Mentor - Should address:
    • Commitment to mentor the candidate
    • Suitability of the candidate for the program
    • Assessment of the value of the research project and its feasibility
    • Mentor’s prior experience mentoring clinical researchers
    • Candidate's access to clinical research support staff
    • Availability of funding for study execution
    • Presence of unresolved contractual obligations that need to be addressed
  6. Letter of Support from Departmental Chair or Division Chief (if applicant is in a larger department) - Should address:
    • Commitment of the division/department to the candidate’s research direction and career goals
    • Guarantee of 25% protected time for the candidate to conduct clinical trials
    • Availability of resources for the candidate

Important: Applicants should communicate with their letter writers to let them know they will receive requests with instructions to upload letters. Applicants should input recommenders in the References section and send the letter requests via the application system as soon as possible upon starting the application. These requests can be sent while your application is in progress. Letters of support have the same application deadline.

  3. On the 'Program Information' tab:
    1. Under "Degree", select "Non-degree".
    2. Under "Program", select "ITMAT Clinical Trialist Training Program, non-degree". 
    3. Under "Term", select "Summer 2026"
  4. You can enter information in stages, at your own pace, and access the application any number of times until submission. 
  5. Once the application has been fully submitted, check the status and note the receipt of recommendation letters.
Clinical Trials Scholarship

Applicants to the Clinical Trialist Training Program may apply in tandem to the Clinical Trials Scholarship, which provides physicians up to 25% protected time (capped at NIH cap) to dedicate towards the program for 2 years.

  • The scholarship is only available to AC track faculty
  • Applicants should not have concurrent sources of salary support for research time.
  • The scholarship is part of the ITMAT Ed Career Development Awards suite
