By April 30,2026, completion of Research Mentor Training, as detailed below, is required for all faculty research mentors of PSOM predoctoral students and postdoctoral trainees, irrespective of whether the faculty are listed on training grants. In addition, refresher training will be required every three (3) years.
The initial requirement entails completion of a Research Mentor Training that addresses the CIMER competencies. Training completed January 2012 or later will satisfy the initial training requirement.
Initial Training
- PSOM ITMAT Ed Research Mentor Training
- Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) Mentor Training
- NIH – Raising a Resilient Scientist Series
- National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) Mentoring Courses
- University of Minnesota Online Mentor Training
- Any other trainings that address effective mentoring competencies
Refresher Training (Required every 3 years)
- Any initial training may also satisfy refresher training.
- ITMAT Ed Mentoring Academy Advanced Training Topics will be offered every Spring.
- Facilitation of Mentor or Mentee Training sessions will also satisfy the refresher requirement.
Timeline and Process
Now – April 30, 2026
- Faculty who have completed a PSOM/ITMAT Ed Mentor Training, can verify that their training record(s) have been recorded by reviewing their Workday Learning record.
- Faculty who have completed other training must submit documentation in order to receive a training record in Workday Learning.
- Faculty who still need training should plan to sign up for a PSOM ITMAT Ed offering or to complete another training.
After May 1, 2026
- Faculty who have not completed training will be precluded from serving as mentors for new mentees, and preceptor roles on training grants. Leadership of BGS, MSTP, BPP, and the PIs of training grants and institutional K awards will be responsible for ensuring mentors have completed training.
Refresher Training will be required every three years
- PSOM/ITMAT Ed Trainings will automatically record to Workday Learning.
- Other trainings will continue to require submission of documentation to be recording in Workday.
